Product Details Ok, let's take a closer look at the packaging and the product here.... As you can see, there isn't a whole lot to this product. Retail packaing is only 8.5"H x 4.75"W. The product itself is a fairly small presentation as you would expect in a simple lighting product. Pass-Thru molex connection is included along with clear plastic wrapped main-line to the UFO looking disc. On that "UFO" there is 6 different colored leds for your visual pleasure. However, they're puny and the disc is huge in comparison....more on that later... The wiring is "ok" at best. There's just something about it that rubs me the wrong way. Perhaps the way too overwrapped, and not fluid enough main-line, or the way the wiring criss-crosses at the connection that just makes me think "breakage" when I look at it. It's not done badly, I've just seen it all too many times. Perhaps, it's just the hideous looking disc at the end of it...yea, that could be it. The included wiring could certainly be a bit longer for the people with larger cases. I hooked this up in a mid tower case and the light would barely reach the upper middle of the case, and that's ONLY with the line to the IDE bracket diagonally strung across the case. Meaning, if you've got a larger Server/SOHO case, you'll be extremely limited as to where and how to mount this. The IDE Bracket Switch has two main switches for the disco light, and a hole. Yes, a hole. Why? I dunno. Maybe so it doesn't disturb the airflow, or maybe to allow a bird feeder attachment. Or maybe it's so some modder can wire up and add his own switch to this empty hole and save space. Yea, I'm sure that's it ;) Anywho, the switch actually has two switches. One for On/Off and one for On/Blink/Chase. The On/Off is pretty self-explantory, but the On/Blink/Chase I feel I need to elaborate on just a tad. The "On" is all 6 leds on. The "Blink" is all 6 leds blinking at the same time. This does not produce anything special. 6 different colors at once looks like a mess. It produces a color the human eye sees as "blah". At least mine do ;) Now the "Chase" feature ( as I call it ) should be cool looking, but it isn't. Not even for a second. Firstly because the leds are so small it's rediculous. Second because since they're so small..they're not powerful at all. Lastly they blink too slow and in such a timed pattern that it's not exciting to watch. Watching air flow past a chrome grill is just about as exciting. I think the pics speak for themself here..... Now on the UFO. Everytime I look at
it I think to myself "why?". Such a broad question
i know..."why is it so big?"..."why
is it so weird looking?".."why does it look empty?
Maybe cuz it has 6 microscopic leds on it ?"..."why does
it look so cheesy!?" Well all those can probably be answered
with bad design. I can see someone wanting to be different with
a lighting design, but why this? personally I think it looks rediculous.
This thing is so small it should be battery operated with a small
watch battery and that would eliminate the messy wiring altogether
( never thought of that did ya? ;) Conclusion If I had to sum this product up in one word it would be "useless". There is far too many nice lighting products on the market to justify $20 for this thing. But I'll give ya more than that. First off, the product is small, not powerful at all, and yet comes with a big IDE bracket like it's a flippin CC kit or something. Second, it's ugly as sin, hard to mount in the case ( to look tolerable anyway ) and it's a wiring mess looking for a place to happen. Why does every manufacturer think that by including a pass-thru molex and an overdone switch, makes it ok? I want to go back to the good old days of adding accessories where everything was bare wire stripped and neatly routed to a baybus/fanbus. I'm tired of all these damn molex's everywhere. The molex plugs are beginning to get bigger than the damn products they're powering. Back to the product....It's got too much baggage for such a small thing. The disc is rediculous to look at since it looks like it's got acne cuz the leds are way too small. Sure you've got blue, green, red, purple, orange and white leds..but you've also got that on a disc over 2" across and when they're lit one at a time, it's useless. "DISCO" it's not! Even if this product was cordless I'd say it's still ugly and wasted space. I can't tell you to buy this product. My advice would be to look around at the current products on the market alittle closer if you're looking for multiple colored lights. For the price of this, you can get much better and much brighter. Even a basic CC Kit would be a smarter choice. This product retails for $19.90 MSRP (USD) and if you'd like one click here.
