Installation:

New Icon Images

Installation is very simple and straight forward. I would mention it's just like installing a floppy drive, but you young bucks wouldn't know what I'm talking about. Since screws are not included, find the screw bag that came with the computer case and find four screws that will fit into the FP34 frame. Install the FP34 into a free 3.5" bay and secure down with the screws. Now the real fun begins with the gaggle of wires. If your motherboard has enough header connections for all the wires, then you are set; if not, that's OK - just plug in what you will use.

Also, an installation driver CD is included to help out with any driver issues, and changes the drive icons to match which media can be used in that slot. This method clears up a lot of confusion when having multiple generic drive icons and not knowing which drive letter matches the slot.

Testing:

I will be testing with SiSoftware Sandra Home 2007 to measure the throughput of the FP34 using a 1GB compact flash card. This will be done using USB 2.0. Now, for the FireWire connection, I won't be able to test that since I don't own any FireWire hardware. Yeah... go figure!

Conclusion:

The FP34 crams a lot of essential connections into a small area, and incorporates the card reader in with these connections. The aluminum construction is solid and lightweight, so that won't be an issue for the LAN party traveler.

The USB 2.0 speeds are more than sufficient for data transfers to and from the FP34. Any speed limitations will be from either the motherboard or devices connected to the the FP34. Talking about transfer speeds, when I plugged in my 1GB CF card, it was almost instantaneously that the data showed up on the computer. Much faster than the other 3.5" card reader I own... strange, but true.  Having access to all of the connections up front versus on the back makes life so much easier, and eliminating that aggravation is well worth the price.

The overall function and looks of the FP34 is flawless and will be added to my collection of other SilverStone products. I would like to thank the folks at SilverStone for sending out the FP34 for review.
