The Main Body:

   The rear of the PSU is identical to most PSUs in the market with the exception of the external Molex connector. This feature is only found in Antec PSUs and from what I've gathered, the watercooling crowd will benefit most from this as it allows them to connect the power for the radiator fans to the PSU without running the wires into the case. Of course, the average Joe would find this feature useful too... for example, you can use this external connector to test a fan you've just bought or to test your home-made rheobus or switch baybus setup. Or simply plug a DC light to act as a night light... :O)

   Having to open up the PSU cover and sleeve up the power lines, Performance-PCs went further and also re-arranged the cables within the PSU itself using matching blue cable ties to keep everything neat and tidy. Kudos to Performance-PCs here for the extra effort. Here's a birds eye view of the PSU body. Simply gorgeous!

   The acrylic PSU cover is attached to the PSU body with the help of extra-strength double sided tape. While this keeps the cover firmly in place, it also makes the PSU about 4mm thicker due to the thickness of the acrylic cover. Turning the PSU to it's side, you'll notice a small gap between the acrylic cover and the PSU body. It's a minor setback although I'd love to see it being covered fully.

   Because of the acrylic cover causing an increase in the thickness of the PSU, it will have difficulty getting into place in some cases. I decided to try it on in a Chieftec case since it's so popular nowadays and I'm glad to report no problem here. The extra thickness doesn't present any problem and the mounting holes on the PSU aligned perfectly with the holes on the PSU plate of the case.

   I also tried it with the Sunbeam VH Acrylic Case and no problem there too. However, any case that has a PSU support bar very near the bottom area of a PSU mount would have a problem, for example, the Beantech BT84 Acrylic Case, VYM Vexx Case, etc. A little modding would be needed to make the PSU fit in these cases.

The Cables:


The Cables

   I would consider this part of the PSU package as the best part of them all. We all at some point of time, tried to hide the extra cables when we're building a system. Some chuck them up at the back of the PSU, away from view... others use cable/zip ties and bundle up the unused cables and some even cut up holes on the mobo tray and route the cables to the underside of the mobo tray.

   Wouldn't it be nice to just unplug those cables that we're not gonna be using and keep them? Especially the Aux Power and ATX12V line which would not be utilized if you're building an AMD rig. OK, so maybe some AMD rig have these ports but only the minority of it. Even the P4 mobos nowadays only requires the ATX12V line. And when we need the extra cabling/connectors, we just plug them back in! Well, the Performance-PCs folks thought of it too and this is what they came up with!

  They have cut the original cables/connectors from the PSU and individually sleeved them with the same 1/4" or 1/2" UV reactive blue sleeving, with the matching heatshrink. Each cable bundle has it's own matching connector for you to connect to the socket connectors on the PSU.

   First up, you'll get two 4 1/2" (11.5cm) long floppy conversion connectors for you old-schoolers out there. You can connect these anyway in your power chain when you need it.

   Then you also get the Fan-only connector which the Performance-PCs folks has also sleeved them up with Black sleeving. I was hoping they'll do it in the same colour.

   Next up are the Aux Power and ATX12V cables/connectors. The Aux Power cable measures at 17" (42.5cm) and has two different connectors on each end. One connector plugs to your motherboard (if any) and the other to the socket connector on the PSU. The other cable is where most P4 users are familiar with, the ATX12V cable. it measures at 20" (50cm) and has the same connector at both ends.

   The next set of cables are the standard power connectors for your devices. You'll get 3 sets of these cables and each set has three power connectors bringing the total to 9 Molex connectors for your devices. At each of the cable sets, you'll find the normal Female Molex connector for you to plug into the socket at the PSU and the connectors for your devices are of the low profile right-angle type connectors.

   There has been talk amongst the modding community on modding your current PSU with these connectors and I guess Performance-PCs took note of that and included them in this Ultima series. Depending on how far your devices are set apart from one another, these connectors can help reduce cable clutter in your case. The shortest set of cable measures in at 18" (45cm) with the Molex connectors set at about 5"(12cm) apart from one another. The other two long ones measures in at 33" (83cm). These are long enough even for full tower cases so if you are using any of those monster cases, you'll have no problems with this PSU cables reaching your devices.

   Did I mentioned that the Acrylic PSU cover, the 80mm fan and these sleevings are UV Reactive? :O) Sorry for the bad pics though... I only had one UV CC Kit! ;oP Looks good in an acrylic case that's for sure!
