A Closer Look: Once out of the box, it's immediately apparent that this is a very well designed and compact unit. The whole unit is a little shorter than my shoe size (I wear a size 12 US shoe) and only 1.24" thick! Flipping over the unit you see the great attention to detail that Logitech put into this device by building in a wire storage system. No more dangling wires. The mm28 Portable Speakers feel hefty in the hands. They do not feel cheap at all. As typical with Logitech products, quality is always a top priority for them. They can afford to charge a few pennies more and build it right the first time. As you've probably noticed already, the clear stand is also a protective cover. No wait, the Protective cover is also a stand...erm, you know what I mean. It's an ingenious idea that is perfectly implemented in this unit. The only drawback is the clear cover will tend to show the scratches, but better than damaging your speaker I assure you. The mm28 Portable Speakers are capable of running off of 4 AA batteries, or you can plug in the DC adapter for long term use. Logitech claims a 45hr run time using the 4 AA batteries only. I can't verify or deny that, but I can say that I used the original set of batteries I put in there weeks ago and it's still going. (not constantly of course). I did however watch a few movies and listened to a couple hours of music on them so far and it still amazes me the quality of sound they produce, and with batteries! Speaking of that, I noticed absolutely no difference in sound quality or output while using batteries or DC power. Testing: Well as I stated at the beginning of this review, my "testing" was going to involve a long road trip (10hrs one way), 5 night stay in a hotel, and the trip back home. I used the mm28 portable speaker with my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop for watching DVD movies and listening to hours of various CD's and MP3's. The mm28 Portable Speakers performed flawlessly and were a real enjoyment to listen to. The quality and depth of the sound produced was outstanding. Especially compared to using stock laptop speakers which you cant hear seemingly 5ft away. Just plug in one of these mm28's and it's a whole new experience. The flip-top cover/stand worked great and the rubber gaskets really kept the speaker in place, even during extended sessions. I used it on batteries all the time for testing and like i said, I've still got the same set in there after my trip. The mm28 Portable Speakers appear to be very easy on the batteries, even with a sexy blue glow on the power button (honestly, everything needs a "blue glow" don't you think?) Conclusion: Honestly, I can't say enough about these mm28 Portable Speakers. They are just so handy to have in a "quality sound pinch" (yes I just made that up). The ability to run extended periods of time on 4 AA batteries, and not be restricted to another DC power adapter, really puts these speakers into a "must have" category. You'll find yourself using them on just about everything with a headphone jack, and the possibilities there are HUGE. It seems just about every tech gadget out there has a headphone jack now, so for the units with a jack and no speakers, here you go! The days of you being limited to headphones only are no more! Plug the mm28 in, and you may never go back to headphones again. You'll want to show this speaker off, I guarantee that. With all said and done, I can heartily recommend the mm28 Portable Speakers to anyone looking for a quality sound experience. From laptops to iPods, this unit will certainly be a welcome addition. With an MSRP price of USD$79.99 and a street price of a little less than that, I do not think they are overpriced at all. The quality sound and quality design are worth the added expense in my opinion. Thanks to Logitech for supplying the giveaway units (and surprise! on the review). Stay tuned to VH in the coming weeks as we'll be giving away not one, but 4 of these speakers!
