Logisys 500w Mesh Power Supply - Blue

Introduction:

In the world of modding today, you will find everything from a keyboard to a mouse to a case and so forth modified somehow or another.  This power supply is a easy way to get just that.  Are you tired of having a plain Jane hunk of steel sitting in the top of your case? Look no further then Directron for the Logisys 500w Mesh Power Supply complete with glowing blue LED's.

Over the past few days, I have been waiting anxiously for a few items that I was about to review, most of which are made by Logisys, including the acrylic case this PSU is going into, whose review can be found here

The power supply was shipped in its normal box, but was also inside of a larger box filled with other items, very well backed with Styrofoam peanuts.  Over this review we are going to take a look at the features of this power supply, along with its specifications and the connectors it provides.

Features:
  • Compliant W/P4&AMD
  • Support Intel ATX 12V Ver.1.1&2.03 Standard
  • 2 x 80mm LED clear fan
  • Meshed metal cover
  • AC power In/Out design
  • Compatible with "Always On" application
  • Serial ATA connector
  • Finger guard for safety
  • Complies with FCC requirements
  • State of the art circuit design and clean PCB layout
  • High Energy Power with Low Ripple

From my use with this power supply, I can say that for the most part, it is very similar to any other supply I have used, although there are a few bells and whistles.  This PSU has 2 80mm Blue LED fans, one is the typical backside exhaust, but there is also one on the inside to provide a better flow of fresh air to keep the PSU cool.  Also, as it states in the title, this is a "mesh" power supply.  Around the entire box it is a mesh design so that it gives off the blue glow easy for the eye to see.  Next up, we will look at the specifications of this PSU.

Specifications:
  • Dimensions: 5.9 x 3.4 x 5.5 (in); 150 x 86 x 140 (mm)
  • AC Input: 100~120/200~240Vac, 10/5A, 50/60Hz
  • DC Output: 500W
  • +3.3V: 28A
  • +5V: 38A
  • +12V: 17A
  • -5V: 0.5A
  • -12V: 0.8A
  • +5VSB: 2A
Connectors:
  • 1 x 20/24-pin Mainboard
  • 1 x 4-pin P4
  • 1 x 6-pin AUX
  • 1 x SATA
  • 4 x 4-pin Molex
  • 1 x FDD

Voltage Testing:

To Test the voltage of this CPU, I used Prime95 and 3dmark2001.  The settings used were the "Torture Test" for Prime95 and the "Benchmark" for 3dmark2001. In the first picture, you will see my idle results, these were taking after 2 hours or idling.  The 2nd picture are the results using MBM5 after I ran the "Torture Test" and 3dmark2001s "Benchmark".  As you can see, it tried to kill my CPU, but never fear, all is alive and well!  Click on the pictures for the larger version.

Idle

Loaded

From these pictures you can see some weird stuff to say the least.  If you notice the +12 you will see that it is running at 15.50. I have a feeling that this 500w power supply isn't actually running at 500w.  I believe its got a maximum output of 500w, but runs at a much lower voltage.  One problem that I had was with my cool cathode black light.  When I turn the light on, my computer locks up and I have to reboot, but with it off I have no problems.  I believe that there is simply too much computer for this power supply, and if it is truly a 500w supply, this should not be an issue.

Conclusion:

Through my installation of the power supply, I noticed that the cables could have been a little bit longer, I had to move my hard drive up further then I wanted to because the SATA connector would not reach.  Also, the case seems to be about the same quality you would receive from a standard PSU.  The only big difference is that this one has the mesh look with the blue LED fans.  So if you are picking this up simply for looks, then it is a very good choice, but if you are looking for the ultimate power supply, then I would suggest on something else.  Below is a picture of my case completed with the power supply so you can see if this is something for you.

I would like to thank Directron for this review item.  Directron has all your needs for modifications, as well as hardware.  If you are interested in picking up this PSU, you can do so here.

Pros:

  • Blue LED's

  • Mesh Casing

  • SATA Connector

Cons:

  • Little noisy

  • Length of cables

  • Instable voltages
