Introduction:
Recently I was on the hunt for an affordable pair of headphones to use occasionally with my laptop. However not only did they have to be affordable, they had to sound good and look good. I really like the around the ear fit for it's superior comfort and also I like the retro look with exposed frame and such, but those are hard to come by in the affordable range, until now. Upon my online research travels I fell across the ThrowBax lineup of EarPollution headphones from iFrogz. I immediately was drawn to the badass good looks and attention to detail. When I seen that they only retailed for $29.99, I was ready to try them. Then when I found them for under $20 at Amazon.com, I just had to have them. I was prepared for them to be junk, but I was delightfully surprised. Let's take a look at the features and specs. Features:
Packaging and Contents: As usual the product is enclosed in a frustration inducing plastic coffin. Once out of the package I noticed just how light these were, though I expected that. The initial feel was that of quality. I love the thicker, and single sided cord. This will take the tangles out of your day. A Closer Look:
I've got to say that I am quite impressed by these headphones. I personally think they look totally badass with the leather look and embroidery all across the top. The "EarPollution" moniker has already gotten a few giggles and inspired a conversation or two about the product. I love all the small touches like the logo'd foam inside the ear cups or the little Biohazard symbol on the frame. The single sided cord makes use so much easier without the worry of tangling all the time. I know because I have a nice pair of sennheiser headphones that have the typical two cord setup and man they drive me fricken crazy with tangles ALL the time! The padded ear cups are nice and soft and cover the entire ear, NOT sit on top of the ear, which makes them so much more comfortable and is exactly what I was looking for. The more I use these the more I like them. I still can't believe they were less than $20! I paid $18.51 w/ free shipping using my Amazon PRIME account actually. If that doesn't rank as a total steal I don't know what would. I bought two blue pair and I like them so much I'm thinking about buying a couple more in different colors for the kids.
Sound: Ok, so by now you all want to know how these puppies sound, right? Well I will say they sound just fine to me. I've read reports of some people online saying that they sound "muddy" and I'm not sure if I agree with them. I found the sound overall to be just fine for what I need them for. I thought the sound was well balanced with good overall range. They had great bass without giving you a headache and the highs were less screechy because of the balance. I'm not some pretentious wannabe audiophile pretending to be an expert on audio reproduction. I'm the average joe who listens to music, movies and podcasts with these and they sound absolutely just fine to me. Do they sound like $150 headphones? Nope. Do they sound like $500 headphones? Nope. Should they? Nope, they only cost about $20 and look badass to boot, and they'll do the job just fine with excellent sound quality. Durability: This is my ONLY area of concern and I would give a word of caution for anyone looking to buy these. Just remember to take them for what they are. These are built sufficiently tough for normal use, but not built to handle the jobsite or rough playing kids, or general abuse. Although they feel great in the hand and on the head, they don't feel like they were machined from a single piece of aluminum, if you know what I mean. You can twist the frame a bit and when you do you, you tend to remember that they're only $20 and are not built for superior durability. Just take care of them and I don't think there will be any problems. I've only had them for a week so I can't speak for the long term just yet, but I don't foresee any problems. I take great care of my electronics. Conclusion: What else can I say other than that if you like the look of these, and you aren't one of those pretentious know-it-all audiophiles, and you actually take care of your stuff, then you need these iFrogz EarPollution ThrowBax headphones. With the 3.5mm plug you can easily move these from your laptop to your iPod to your iPhone or home stereo. The 4 foot cord length is just right for not getting in the way too. I don't know about you guys, but I love the retro-styling and over the ear design. The quality and design for the price here is fantastic. The comfort is exceptional and the look will get you compliments everywhere you take them. There's nothing like having people drool over your $20 headphones and your buddy with the $300 Dr. Dre's is getting no love...LOL.
