Introduction:

Power Supplies are one of the most important components in your system and without a quality power supply with enough stable juice to handle what your system needs you can have loads of trouble. Anything from system instability to flat out crashes and worst case scenario you'll be left with an unbootable machine. Luckily todays power supplies are much better than in years past not only in stability but also power efficiency which saves you money over time.

Zalman which is famous for it's high quality copper heatpipes and very quiet PC cooling hardware started releasing high quality, quiet and efficient power supplies not long ago with 500w and 600w models with integrated heatpipes to cool its innards. Zalman is upping their ante into this crowded market with a new 850w and 1000w model for those extreme users. I reviewed the 600w version back in December 2006 and it was quite nice so I expect the 850w version I'm reviewing today to be more of the good stuff. Read on to find out if it lives up to the Zalman name.

The retail box for the Zalman ZM850-HP is quite large and heavy. Inside the box you'll find two more brown boxes. The top one holds the power supply itself and manual, and the lower box holds the extra modular cables along with a power cable, velcro cable strap, fan adapter and screws.
