If you mention the name Zalman,
quite few product images and experiences come to mind. You've no doubt seen
their past award winning CPU coolers, HTPC enclosures, and water cooling. Among
some of their other products, you'll find more case fans, fan controllers,
thermal greases, mice, audio products, and power supplies.
About eight months ago, Diceman the Editor in Chief, had the pleasure of
checking out one of their heat pipe technology power supplies. The Zalman
ZM-850HP boasted six 12 Volt power rails all providing 18 amps each. Even by
today's standards, that's a heap of power for the Intel Core 2 Quad systems
boasting NVidia SLI graphics cards.
Well, the stigma behind everyone thinking they needed 1000 Watt power supplies
to have the perfect performing system has all but faded away. When Quad Core and
SLI first arrived, everyone was afraid that it absolutely required a top end PSU
with huge wattage. To the experienced computer system user, they knew this was
an expensive and unnecessary upgrade. It was left to us to help educate everyone
else to the folly of that belief.
It's just now becoming apparent where a PSU offering 700 watts and higher are
truly needed. In fact, just about every SLI system I've seen has a 700 to 800
watt PSU. If you're ever really questioning just how much power is enough, you
can check out some of the more elite system builders like Velocity PC. Often,
they pick a PSU that can ample power for now and a little extra for future
upgrades.
Zalman came forward and offered us another PSU from their Heatpipe Cooler
series. Today, I'll be taking a look at the
Zalman
ZM750-HP (Heat Pipe) 750 Watt
Power Supply. It'll definitely be put to the test to see how well the unit has
been designed. Who knows, maybe there'll be some smoke!
