Testing:
Conclusion: Using the NexStar GX was an easy process. Although alot of it is plastic, it's still a very sturdy unit representing Vantec's usual high quality standards. Most external hard drive enclosures today seem to favor the upright position by default, however the NexStar GX is only meant to be laid flat, even though you could theoretically stand it up on it's side. There are no foot supports or brackets included though, so stand it on it's edge at your own risk. I'm not real fond of the large white plastic cover that enclosed the entire top of the unit. It is however made from quality plastic and even the tabs that you need to play with to pry it off are very well constructed. I had no fears of snapping them off as I would with lesser quality materials. The NexStar GX is Vantec's newest addition to their external hard drive enclosure family and the only one with a built-in 3 port USB hub powered thru the PC. That's a great addition as, no matter how many USB ports your motherboard may have included, you really always need more (or maybe that's just me :) I would however ONLY connecting the NexStar GX's USB cable to a native hard wired USB port on your motherboard. I would not suggest you attempt to power this unit with the front USB ports on your chassis, etc. You'll want to be sure you have the strongest USB 2.0 connection, and not something un-shielded or poorly made, as most front mounted stuff is. It may work, but it's not the best solution. Something I don't think I've mentioned at all yet is the fact that this unit will also power on and power off according to your systems status. Meaning you shut down your PC, this unit will also shut down. That includes turning off the USB ports and also powering down the hard drive inside. It will also auto-start with your system too. That's nice to not have to worry about leaving this on all alone when your system is down for the night, etc. The subtle blue LED status light on the front is a nice touch and also not super (IM BLIND!) bright. It's a nice blue, as they all should be. I can thoroughly recommend this unit for anyone looking for a high quality external hard drive enclosure with a built-in 3 port USB hub. With the new features Vantec packed into this unit, it's a real functional piece of hardware.
