Introduction:

Vantec NexStar Vault HDD Enclosure

Vantec is well known for it's NexStar line of  hard drive enclosures and we've reviewed quite a few of them, along with their other product lines, here on VH over the years with favorable results. Vantec recently took their basic hard drive enclosure to another level by offering a secured model called the "Vault". This is a password protected setup that basically splits your hard drive 50/50 with one side being public (unsecured) and the other side being private (secured) and it does it all automatically. Let's see how Vantec's Vault get this accomplished.

  • Protect your data from unwanted access

  • Encryption Technology

  • 6-Digit PIN

  • Supports PC or Mac

  • Hard Drive is divided into "Public" and "Vault"

  • Attractive blue LED Indicates Power and HDD Activity

  • Screw-free Design

  • Protective Hard Case Included

  • No Drivers Required

  • USB 2.0

What's Included

Special USB Cable

The retail box for the Vantec Vault is typical Vantec quality, which is to say that it's good. It's also very compact. The box is sleeved with the fancy silver vault look which underneath is a semi-plain black box. Inside the box you'll find a plastic protective case which holds the (also plastic) Vault. You'll also get the typical instruction manual and a special USB cable with 2 plugs on it with one being red. Hmmm, interesting.

Side Vents

Opening the protective case for the Vault and getting inside was simple enough. The first thing I noticed was just how light it all was. Even the vault inside the case is light. Both are made of sturdy plastic instead of metal so that's why they're so light. The protective case seems a bit odd since it's oversized to one side. It doesn't have that custom fit feel and seems almost an afterthought.

You can see the number pad down the side of the vault and this is what you'll be using when you enter your secret code to access the vault once installed. You'll also notice the silver mesh sides. These are simply for ventilation for the hard drive inside.
