About 4 months ago I
reviewed the Ultra X3 600W power supply. This time around, I will be reviewing the
Ultra X2 750W Extreme Edition. At first I thought this was a step backwards, but
actually it's a step forward in technology and style. Here... I will let the folks
from Ultra explain why it's better.
All New Redesigned 750 Watt
X2-Extreme Edition (X2)
Just when the technicians and designers thought they had the perfect power
supply in Ultra's legendary laboratories, its crack team of geniuses
one-upped their own incredible product. Enter the hard-working power supply
with the glossy titanium finish – the X2 750 Watt Power Supply.
Why X2 is Better than Ever
If you’re familiar with the X-Connect (1st Generation) you know that it’s
the world’s first completely modular design. That means you only have to
connect the cables you need. This leaves your system’s airflow unimpeded by
clunky, chunky air stifling cables. The end result? Airflow that cools and
protects your precious components. This born-to-be-modded power supply goes
several steps beyond its award-winning predecessors. The Ultra 750-watt
titanium finish X2-Extreme Eddition features FlexForce technology, which
delivers easy cable routing while remaining hidden within your case.
FlexForce’s special design allows air to travel 30-percent more effectively
than standard cables. This results in a quantum leap in performance. Plus
the 750-Watt X2-Extreme Edition dresses its cables in a sleek, titanium UV
reactive finish.
Dual Rail Technology for More Stable
Power
Specially developed for extreme gaming rigs! This 750-watt X2-Extreme
Edition features Dual Rail Technology. The X2's critical 12V power are
divided into two separate rails. This distributes cleaner power to your CPU,
offering better stability and greater overclocking potential. You’ll get
phenomenal system performance with the this 750-watt X2-Extreme Edition!
Much better than what
I could do; now let's get on with the show.

A Closer Look:

Retail box |

The Golden seal |

Model number |
The retail box is
covered in plastic; this gives a sense of security by knowing the product hasn't
been tampered with. A second line of defense is the the large, gold sticker that
seals the top flap closed. A double seal of protection. Sweet.
The retail box is colorful and has the important
information right on the top lid for easy viewing, while
Ultra X2 is on all the other
sides. The information on the top lid is the specifications of the power supply,
along with a nice picture of the newly redesigned
X2.

Déjà-vu |

The Cable box |

PSU protection |
After removing the plastic
wrap and popping the gold seal of approval, I opened the top lid - only to be
faced with this feeling of deja-vu. Inside is another box bearing the same
X2
graphics as the outside of the retail box. This inner box is what holds all the
modular power cables. On the bottom of the retail box is the new and improved
Ultra
X2, held firmly in some soft foam padding.

Window two |

Rear |
Now that I have the
Ultra X2
EE removed from its retail box, I can plainly see the exterior reconstruction
it has undergone. Actually, you can't miss it. The titanium finish is mirror-like,
effortlessly grabbing your attention and your fingerprints. On one side is the
ULTRA name in chrome that covers the space over the 120mm fan. The rest of the
opening uses a mesh grill with round openings. The 120mm fan on the inside has
blue UV cathods incorporated into the fan housing. On two of the side panels are
small rectangular windows to allow the blue light to shine through.

X-Connect system |
Onto the back side, which has
the X-Connect system for the cables. I must say they really cleaned up the look
of this PSU. Previously, the plugs protruded from the chassis of the power supply;
now, the X-Connect
plug system is flush mounted to the chassis of the power supply and framed in
with a chrome border. They also changed the plugs themselves by using the Molex-
and SATA-shaped plugs, thus avoiding any confusion about what plug is what.
