Introduction: Who here remembers the days of cooling your CPU with a peltier? OK, put your hands down - you look silly. The ones with your hands still raised, I'm sure you remember putting closed cell foam around the CPU to keep the condensation from shorting out the motherboard. Seriously, put you hands down. Well, the days of dangerous condensation and peltiers may have come to an end. The Ultra ChillTEC is a CPU cooler combined with a TEC. The combination of the two, in conjunction with the Management Unit, provides a safe way to effectively cool the CPU without any manual input from the end user. A built in fail-safe system keeps the CPU safe from a TEC malfunction. OK: its time to crank up the MHz and see how well this cooler functions, and for the last time... put your hands down! About the Company: Ultra Products is a
global, technology-solutions provider with headquarters in Fletcher, Ohio. The
company strives to offer a wide range of solutions, products and services all
with a common thread: Innovation, value and quality. Specifications:
Packaging:
The ChillTEC box comes wrapped in plastic to discourage tampering when it's on a store shelf somewhere. The retail box is highly detailed, with graphics and information on what processors the cooler will support on the front of the box. The back side has the specifications of the product, while one side panel has the contents and the other panel a performance chart. The contents inside are well protected in both foam and a plastic shell. A Closer Look:
When the items are removed from the box, there will be three separate pieces. The main piece will be the cooler with the TEC already attached. The other pieces are the 5.25" Management Unit and a small box labeled "Assembly Parts". Let's start off with the cooler. This thing is large and heavy, and care needs to be used when installing it. The ChillTEC is is designed like two separate coolers merged into one housing. If you look at the way it is put together, you will understand what I mean. First, I will have Ultra explain how the TEC is set up on the ChillTEC . "Ultra uses a TEC, sandwiched between two copper plates, each plate with four heat-pipes leading to a large, fan cooled radiator. Because TEC's are capable of cooling below room temperature, often condensation is a concern. But not with the Ultra Chill-TEC. The Chill-TEC's control unit does not apply power to the TEC unless the CPU reaches a certain temperature. Up to this point, the CPU is cooled by the heat-pipes on the "cold" side of the TEC. Once the CPU is hot, power is applied to the TEC and the CPU is chilled. The hot side of the TEC is cooled by the second set of heat-pipes. This perfect balance of thermo-electric cooling and heat-pipe cooling ensures the CPU is kept at the perfect operating temperature. Ideal for hardcore use, even opening up the potential for overclocking that standard air cooling alone can not provide." I couldn't of said it any better then that.
Next is the Management Unit, which fits in a free 5.25" drive bay. This unit is the brains for the TEC: it senses when the CPU temperature starts to rise, and then applies the power to TEC to cool the CPU. This new design and use of TEC cooler is far more superior than old school types, where the TEC was always on, creating condensation, and burning out when not properly cooled, leading to a fried CPU. The front of the Management Unit has a LCD display and two buttons. The display will show the total run time of the cooler, the run time since the last reboot, an animation to show the load of the TEC, and, of course, the temperature of the TEC.
The button on the left side of the display is used to change the background color of the LCD display. There are seven colors to choose from and they are, Dark Blue, Shallow Blue, Dark Green, Shallow Green, White, Purple, and Red which is used for the alarm. The right button is used to switch the temperature gauge between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
