Introduction: OCZ Technology is well known to enthusiasts around the world. Their consistent innovations for enthusiasts have garnered them quite a following over the years. Today I have one such innovation that is in a new direction for OCZ; the CPU cooling market. The new OCZ Tempest is a heatpipe cooler compatible with AMD 939/940/AM2 sockets and Intel 775/478 sockets. Let's take a closer look at this new Tempest and see how it performs. Specifications:
A Closer Look: Now that we've got the obligatory specs out of the way, let's take a closer look at the Tempest itself and what you'll get. The clear retail packaging of the OCZ Tempest cooler is a bit much. The back and sides of the packaging show all the important features and specifications on the Tempest. Inside the package you'll find a ton of mounting hardware which is why this is a "universal cooler" application. The instruction manual is very well done making it clear to understand how your particular installation will need to be done. The included 92mm clear cooling fan w/blue led lighting is round giving it a more modern look as compared to the simpler square LED fans. That's an extra touch in an attempt to set this cooler apart from the pack on the market today. Is it quiet? More on that later...
Taking a closer look at the OCZ Tempest itself, we see a nicely done quad-heatpipe cooler. The Quality looks excellent on the heatpipes and the fins. The bottom is larger than most and very smooth. At first glance the quick release fan mounting bracket is a dream come true. However when it comes to the installation process, I notice a flaw in the design.
