Introduction:

OCZ is a major player in the DDR/DDR2 memory market these days ranking up there with the best of the best. They continue to innovate and expand their market reach with top notch quality and unique product selections.

Recently I took at a look at the 2x1GB PC2-8000 Platinum XTC memory kit. That was rated for 1000mhz and performed very well. The Kit I have for you today is the 2x1GB PC2-7200 Platinum XTC w/ Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP) and rated for 900mhz at a tight 4-4-3 timing on a compatible motherboard such as those with the NVIDIA 590 SLI chipsets (ex. ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe).

It's also equipped with OCZ's trademark mirrored mesh heatspreaders. Let's take a look at what OCZ tells us about this particular kit.

"OCZ SLI-Ready memory modules are programmed to boot at 900MHz DDR2 with supremely fast timings of 4-4-3. Only motherboards equipped with the custom-designed BIOS, such as those designed for NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCPs, can detect the optimized SPD profiles and ensure the memory functions under the best possible conditions. The exclusive OCZ SPD specifications take out the guesswork and provide enthusiasts and gamers with significant overclocked performance with no manual adjustment or compatibility issues."

As you can see the retail packaging for the OCZ PC2-7200 Platinum XTC memory is exactly the same as the PC2-8000 and many other kits. It secures the memory sticks just fine. This approach seems to be the industry standard now for top notch memory.

On to the OCZ trademark sexy (that's right I said it!) chrome mirrored heatspreaders. This is one feature that truly sets OCZ apart in the high end memory category. No other memory manufacturer has heatspreaders this unique, or most likely, this expensive to make. OCZ has gone the extra mile in, not only the looks department, but also the cooling department. Honestly with it's almost 100% mesh design, you really don't even need airflow for these kits to stay cool. The heat will just ooze out of the mesh. I think it really stands these kits apart for the water-cooling aficionados out there also. It's a perfect kit for no-to-low airflow systems, and cases with high airflow, they're just that much better!

The one thing I wish memory makers would do next is etch, or stamp the timings into the memory heatspreaders. I think the next manufacturer to do that will take the looks to the next level. As for now, the OCZ Platinum XTC's are pretty damn BLING!
