Introduction: Today we have the newest power supply from the great folks over at OCZ Technology. It's the first in a new series from OCZ called the ModXStream. The one we'll be looking at today is the 780w version and it's also offered in a 900w version for you hardcore users out there. The best thing about this new series is it's a modular power supply which really helps clean up the case interior and enhance cooling. OCZ has really stepped up their power supplies in the last year or so and we've already reviewed both the 700w GameXStream, the 850w GameXStream, and the 1000w ProXStream units here on VH and we've been extremely happy with all of those. The quality and package offered have been exceptional. With the addition of a modular cabling system, yet keeping the same great black/blue looks, I think we just might have another winner on our hands. Let's take a closer look at this new PSU and see how it stacks up against some other PSU's on the market that we've reviewed. Packaging: The retail packaging is pretty typical for a modern high end power supply in todays market. You'll get the usual power cord, screws for attaching unit to a chassis, owners manual and in this case, the grouping of modular cables. Specs:
A Closer Look: The power supply itself looks pretty much identical to the GameXStream series with the flat (satin) black finish and single 120mm blue LED fan. The rear of the unit is also honeycomb for extra ventilation. Although this is a modular power supply, it's not 100% modular. You have a few cables hard-wired to the unit itself and can not be removed. Those cables are the main ATX 20/24 pin cable, a 4pin/8pin CPU power cable and a single PCI-e cable (an addition PCI-e cable is included in the modular cables should you run SLI or Crossfire). The Modular Cables: Here you can see the rear of the unit where you can attach the needed cabling as you see fit. Modular power supplies are all the rage today and it's nice to see OCZ add this to their already great lineup. The cable connections utilize strong 6pin and 8pin connections that snap into place. No worries of a cable falling out here. All cables are sleeved in black also for a nice uniform look. The only thing I didn't like was the way the 4pin attached to the 20pin for 24pin ATX connection; it doesn't. You have to squeeze them together with your fingers and insert into the motherboard. I would've expected a simple snap together system by now. << Back to VH FrontPage | Installation & Testing >>
