Introduction: LapWorks is one of those companies that specializes in a field often overlooked in the mobile computer world. That field is ergonomics. With more and more people on the move we think less about ergonomics, and LapWorks is here to help us with that. They are doing that with a new product called the Futura, which is multi-purpose device for a notebook computer. It can either serve as a desktop stand or as a laptop desk for the on-the-go business person. Specifications: Design: Weight: 16.25oz Heat Reduction: Materials: A Closer Look:
The Futura is constructed from high impact plastic and is extremely lightweight. When folded in half, it can be stored flat in the included neoprene bag. When used as a desktop stand the unit is still folded in half, only partially being open to allow the support arm to be used. The support arm has five positions to adjust the angle of the Futura. When in desktop mode, there are a total of 14 rubber pads - 7 on the top and 7 on the bottom - to grip the laptop to a flat surface. These pads keep the whole system from moving around.
When unfolded, the Futura can be used on your legs to avoid the potential of being burned. When open, the laptop can be centered on the Futura. Rubber pads on the top and bottom keep things from sliding around. While being used on your lap, the plastic will not transfer the heat to your legs and cause a potential burn to your thighs. Conclusion: Once again, a simple product to perform a simple task easily and efficiently without the hassle of any complicated setup procedures. In just a matter of a few seconds, you can set up from laptop to desktop or vice versa. Large laptop owners like myself may notice some flex in the Futura stand or even having the support arm pop free. Although this is an issue, it was a very minor one and will only be relevant to the owners of heavier laptops. Being a guy, it's difficult to keep my legs tightly closed while using the Futura in laptop mode so it's uncomfortable for me, but for other people this may not be an issue. Plus, I don't like having to bend my neck down to type; I would rather place the laptop on a desk or similar surface.
