Introduction:
We all knew that when the Apple iPad was announced, there was going to be tons of accessories come down the line, just as was the story with the iPod and iPhone. With the iPad being touted as not only a productivity and multimedia consumption device, but also an e-reader, we could assume that accessories that prop, slant or otherwise hold your device at a certain angle would be forthcoming. Today I have for you one such device; the LapWorks iPad Recliner ($34.95). This is an adjustable stand capable of holding your iPad (or other similarly shaped device) at different angles for your reading pleasure. Let's take a closer look at the features. Features:
A Closer Look:
When I was first contacted by LapWorks to review their new iPad Recliner, I was quite excited. I had just got my iPad and this product looked neat. The touted adjustability of it, along with the slick curvy lines of the product peeked my interest enough to give it a go. The retail box is nice enough with all the necessary information. Once I removed the iPad Recliner from the box, my first thoughts were that it was an awful lot of plastic. We'll see if there's a reason for that in a minute. There's a couple of rubber lined edges on the bottom of the stand to keep your device from sliding around when it's rolling forward or back during adjustment. There is also two rubber feet on the base that complete the stable footing. Installation: Assembly takes just a few seconds. Simply attach the base plate to the stand using the provided turn screw under the stand, although this feels a little cheap until the screw gets tightened as it fumbles around. However once tightened it's solid as a rock. As a built-in bonus, if you loosen the screw just a touch, you can easily slide the base up and down for easy adjustments without having to flip over the unit. It's actually quite nice.
Once together and sit upright, the stand looks like a thick silver banana and this is for good reason; stability. You don't want to trust your expensive iPad or reader to something flimsy. This LapWorks iPad Recliner is rock solid when installed correctly. Just be sure to assemble the unit as pictured above and not by what appears to be the obvious way by screwing through the slot on the base. This can be deceiving so be aware. Check out the video below from LapWorks that gives you a better idea on installation so there is no confusion.
Conclusion: The LapWorks iPad Recliner has been a pleasure to work with. It's simple as it gets with only two pieces and does its job perfectly. Sure it may look a little thick, or dated at first glance, but give it a chance in person. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality feel and ease of use. So does it hold your iPad securely once positioned? Yup. Does it allow you to position your iPad horizontally or vertically? Yup. Does it allow easy height adjustments to the angle? Yup. Is this unit easy to travel with? Nope. It's bigger than your iPad. :) Priced at $34.95 at the time of this review, it's reasonable and I can totally recommend the LapWorks iPad Recliner for you all.
I'd like to send out a big thanks to LapWorks for sending out this unit for review.
