Kingston KHX 4x512mb PC2-8500

Introduction:

I have a bit of an unusual review for you today. I usually have a 2x1GB configuration when I'm reviewing a 2GB kit, like my PC2-6400 review here, however this time I have a total of 4 memory sticks to make up the 2GB, hence the 4x512mb designation. The reason for this odd setup is because that is what Kingston sent me. I had asked them for their "new" 2x1GB PC2-8500 kit that is listed on their website and instead they sent me 2 of the older 2x512mb kits. Go figure. Same difference you ask? Well I suppose that depends on your motherboard. For me personally, it's not a big deal (and honestly 4 sticks look pretty beefy on the board).

On to the hardware here, this PC2-8500 KHX HyperX dual channel memory kit is currently the fastest DDR2 memory that Kingston sells. It's rated for speeds up to 1066mhz and a latency timing of 5-5-5-15 @ 2.2v. Here's a little bit about Kingston KHX DDR2...

From the Kingston Website:

KHX:DDR2 - It's Here - HyperX DDR2 memory, the next-generation evolution of DDR memory technology. Like all Kingston HyperX products, HyperX DDR2 modules were specifically engineered and designed to meet the rigorous requirements of PC enthusiasts. HyperX DDR2 offers faster speeds, lower latencies, higher data bandwidths and lower power consumption. HyperX is available in single and dual channel memory kits.

The retail packaging is simple and secure. The packages are secured by the factory specifications label tape over the front and sides. So you have to break the tape to open the package. That's good so you know you're getting an un-tampered with package.

The trademark Kingston blue heatspreaders covering the memory sticks is still one of my favorites. They're just plain damn good looking. And 4 of them stacked up is just sexy. The heatspreaders are made of aluminum and help to dissipate heat generated from high performance memory modules. I've seen a ton of various heatspreaders from many different manufacturers, the Kingston's are some of the most securely mounted. That's a good thing.

You'll notice the "evaluation" sticker on the memory heatspreaders. That's typical to review units allocated to be sent out to various media. You're particular kit would not have those little stickers.
