Closer Look:

They Kingston Hyper X line has been around since DDR and has done fabulous across the series' history. Following the tradition, the KHX1100D3LLK (2/1GB) Kit comes in weighing at a solid 1375MHz operating with 7-7-7-20 memory timings and eating up a relatively low 1.7 volts. The last DDR2 kit required a healthy 2.2v to operate at stock frequencies and needed even more if you wanted to push the memory modules higher. Again, the trade off is lower heat and better designed ICs over the more difficult DDR2 modules.

The kit comes with Kingston's excellent blue RAM Sinks with the Hyper X signature and Kingston emblem partly all in bright red. All the memory makers around all want their own memory sinks that help their product stand out. Sometimes going with just a deep, clean basic color can do more for drawing the attention of the buyer. If you think about it, there aren't many abstract colored memory modules out there. And the taller extreme looking "comb" style heat sinks proved to be more costly than feasible which has been reflected in the price. This proves that basic cooling doesn't have to be extreme looking to look very, very cool.

The modules have just one small one inch sticker indicating what model kit it is and voltage specification. This is another thing I like about the memory kit. Anything over this size a sticker is just too much and stands to reason that it could hamper any cooling benefits of RAM sinks. All any memory manufacturer has to do is find a signature RAM sink that works for them and keep the stickers small. Kingston doesn't use stickers to hide their modules which is exactly how we like them.

Module Info

Kingston fans will be happy to know that a new RAM heatsink design has been approved for release on future modules starting the month of August. Not that there is anything wrong with the current sinks, Kingston felt it is time to celebrate a new look as a new product is released. And being DDR3 will now be the new standard for both Intel and AMD systems (probably next year), it's a pretty good time to make that change. Another great feature of their newest DDR3 memory kits is how cool they remain during all operations. Something flashy is always a plus. But, something literally cool and flashy are much appreciated as the industry battles thermal issues.

Powah!
