Introduction:

Kingston HyperX 8GB DataTraveler

Storage devices are finally evolving. We now have solid state drives with capacities up to 256GB assuming your bank account has enough to shell out the roughly $8,000.00 to get one. Even USB drives have climbed up to the 64GB capacity with even larger ones some how rumored to be in the works.

The great thing about solid state and USB drives is how rugged and reliable they can be. They take abuse and repeated use extremely well. It doesn't matter if the system gets jarred or shaken, it'll continue to work as if nothing happened.

Till we can all afford those expensive SSD drives, we still have the more affordable options like portable eSATA and USB devices. Since many users don't quite have the need for eSATA, USB pen drives still remain the easiest portable means to get your data where you need it.

The best USB pen drives seem to come from memory makers. The largest varieties definitely come from memory manufacturers. Kingston is one of those great makers who has a lot of effort invested in their RAM and USB pen drives. One of their newest devices is the Hyper-X 8GB Data Traveler USB Drive. Take a look at a pretty slick USB drive.

The Hyper-X model is the latest to the Data Traveler series which has been a popular series among professionals. The main differences between the Data Traveler series are the read and write speeds that differ between them all. The previous Secure drives have a top end transfer rate of about 24MB/s, with the various other models ranging 10 to 20MB/s. Write speeds were half that.

The transfer rates have increased as better storage modules are produced. The Hyper-X has a 30MB/s read rate and a 20MB/s write rate following suit with those modules. Past performance pen drives tested topped out around 30 to 33MB/s.

The Hyper-X offers a slightly sportier look than any previous model and is built around the same colors as the heat spreaders found on Kingston's Hyper X Memory Modules. The housing is made from blue "Hyper X" aluminum with a partial rubber boot that seems to give it a better grip for handling.

I know that sounds a little picky, but have you ever tried inserting a slippery, plastic USB pen drive in to the back of your computer's USB port? Not everyone has a front USB port on their computer case and sometimes the cheaper case's have improperly working USB ports. We won't mention any names, but it pays to pick a decent case these days.

Opening the Hyper-X requires a very sophisticated tool that can be found at the end of either hand. A thumb. There's no removable caps to worry about. Simply press the slider which acts like a button and the USB adapter locks in to position. And if you feel so inclined, it comes with a small optional cord so you can attach it to a key chain or whatever.
