Installation:
Mounting hardware for Intel and AMD CPU's are provided, along with the instruction manual. I will be using the AMD2 mounting clip. The cooler uses the stock retention bracket, which is nice and eliminates the need to remove a preinstalled motherboard. Simply place the clip over the cooler base and lock down the retention clip. Testing: Test Rig:
For testing, BurnInTest Ver4.0 was used, running a total of three tests in a sequence of ON for one hour at 100% CPU load, then OFF for 30 minutes to cool. The temps are collected and an average temp is calculated.
Conclusion: The GIGABYTE 3D Rocket II falls into that unique category, but unique doesn't always make a product perform well. During my first batch of tests, the idle temp for my CPU was 33C with the fan at both the normal speed and OC speed settings. The results were the same when both cores of the CPU was at 95%, and only showed a 1c difference between 1900RPM and 3000RPM. I was happy with the load results compared to a few other coolers I have reviewed in the past with this CPU. Also worth mentioning is that with the fans running at normal mode, the sound coming from the cooler wasn't heard over other system components. Now on the other hand, with the fans running at the OC setting or 3000RPM, the noise dominated that of the other system components. Overall, the 3D Rocket II performed well, but I would have liked to have seen better results with the fans maxed out. Even with the fans at a lower RPM, the results were good and the noise level was acceptable. The removable top ring is a nice touch for those with clearance issues within the enclosure, and the UV rings add some bling for those with black lights. The option of having the speed control knob mounted either up front or in the rear is also nice; I've never understood why other companies don't do the same. Why have it mounted in the back when it's a PITA to get to most of the time. Anyway, the bottom line is the GIGABYTE 3D Rocket II performs well and the simple features make it stand out. I would like to thank GIGABYTE for sending this unit out to VH for review.
