ECS KN3 SLI2 Extreme

Introduction:

Being an old school technician who use to play with some of the oldest 286s and before, I've seen many a revisions and new names in computer parts manufacturers come and go. When ECS EliteGroup first arrived on the market scene in 1987, their products were up and coming just as every other major manufacturer, but with a few bumps along the way. My first experience with ECS was their Socket 7 series motherboards and many were used in many budget oriented machines.

It was only a matter of time and demand before ECS came to the table with some serious cards to play, so to speak. Their recent motherboards were among the first to change public perception with some good reviews of stability as well as some peripheral upgrades. Naturally, adding some upgraded features to motherboards is pointless if the platform isn't stable, so ECS stepped up to the plate. In this review, we have the KN3-SLI2 Extreme under the microscope which boasts many more features than the average motherboard as well as ECS's 999-DIMM which helps the "DDR2 eliminate data quality issues and support increased overclocking".

Features:

  WHQL Certificate
WHQL Certificate
  999 DIMM
Makes the DDR eliminate data highway quality issues and support increased overclocking.
  64bit support
Allows platforms to access more memory and larger files. Large memory intensive applications, such as audio and video encoding, complex engineering programs and games, can see dramatic performance increases.
  IEEE 1394
Incorporates with 1394 port supporting data transfer rate up to 400Mbps
  Dualcore
Dual-core is basically two separate processors on a single chip. Those two processors can outperform single-core processors on most multithreaded applications while running at lower clock speeds and consuming less power.
  Color Map
Color-coded pin headers and slots make it easy to match plug
  HT 2000
More bandwidth, low latency, and better efficiency.
  E-class Exterior
Elegant PCB appearance stands out the key insertions and reduces distraction during installation.
  Serial-ATA 2
Double bus bandwidth which provides blazingly high disk performance, ensuring your computing experience will be faster, more reliable, and completely with current and future hardware and software.
  Dual Faced Cable
An easy, user-friendly way to plug-in or remove digital devices.
  8-Channel Audio
Enable premium home theater experience through the PC,with support for all major audio format.
  Easy Match
Color-coded pin headers and slots make it easy to match plug
  nVIDIA PCI Express
Doubles the bandwidth of AGP 8X, delivering 4GB/s of upstream data transfer and 4 GB/s of downstream data transfer.
  PCI 2.3
PCI 2.3 support!
  Dual Gigabit Ethernet
Up to one-Gigabit data transfer rate. The Ethernets can be used for sharing Internet Access or act as a redundant link. In the event of a connection failure, one Ethernet can replace another for data transfer.
  Anti-Burn Guardian
Alert before inserting or removing memory module
  USB 2.0
Delivers transfer speeds up to 480Mb/s for easy connectivity and ultra-fast data transfers
  Q-Boot
F11 Hot key to boot from different devices
  eSATA
With eSATA approved, the signal quality and the Max cable length is 2x longer than conventional one. It also supports external HDD hot plug and keyed connector end for poor-proof.
  Dr. LED
Fuzzy logic design for diagnosing PCI slots health !
  FSB 1.2GHz +
Awesome overclocking! Support Intel latest FSB 1066MHz CPU with super overclocking capability. Pumps up CPU from 1066MHz up to an incredible 1.2 GHz+ FSB.
  PCI Extreme
This slot can provide ultra signal quality for outstanding audio and video card performance.
  NCQ
With NCQ ( Native Command Queuing ) function support to earn 30% shorter HDD spinning
  Round Corner PCB
Rounded corners for strength and safety!

This is quite some list of features. The one of which that stands out foremost to me is the FSB 1.2GHz+ support. This suggests that ECS has been able to control and add better overclocking features. We'll see in a bit, but first let's check out the motherboard's specifications and layout.
