Test Results:

Testing consisted of Sisoft Sandra's Memory Bandwidth benchmarks and also hours of hardcore gaming and 12 hour sessions of Prime95. On top of that, the RST Pro2 was used to validate Crucials rating of 4-4-4-12 @ 800MHz. The following speeds and timings were completely stable and experienced zero issues with.

  • PC2-6400 (DDR2-800): 4-4-4-12 @ 2.2v (Stable)

  • PC2-8000 (DDR2-1000): 5-5-5-15 @ 2.2v (Stable)

  • PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066): 5-5-5-15 @ 2.3v (Stable)

Intel E6400 @ 800MHz

4-4-4-12 @ 800MHz

800MHz @ 4-4-4-12

Intel E6400 @ 1000MHz

5-5-5-15 @ 1000MHz

1000MHz @ 5-5-5-15

Intel E6400 @ 1066MHz

5-5-5-15 @ 1066MHz

1066MHz @ 5-5-5-15

If you look closely at the above Sisoft sandra memory benchmarks, you'll notice the ratings for DDR2-1000 are higher than DDR2-1066. The reason for this is the CPU is heavily overclocked for the DDR2-1000 benchmark, and only running default speed on the DDR2-1066 benchmark. The simple answer to that is the fact that on this ASUS P5B Deluxe, I have the easy memory divider to run DDR2-1066 without overclocking the CPU, however there isn't one for DDR2-1000. So, I had to pick my route to overclock the CPU to get the memory up to 1000MHz. I think it also gives you an idea on how much the CPU can effect benchmarks in general.

The bottom line is the fact that this Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2-6400 can overclock extremely well, and quite easily from it's 800MHz stock rating up to 1066MHz and probably more. It goes to show that there is some very high quality memory modules under the heat spreaders on this kit. I didn't tear them open for fear of damaging the many LED's that are scattered around the memory PCB.

Simply ....

...Stunning!

Conclusion:

I could probably sum up this whole review with two words; 'quality' and 'beautiful'. However this memory deserves much more than that. This Crucial Ballistix Tracer is without a doubt the best looking memory I've ever seen. It's also some of the best performing memory I've ever used. During testing and overclocking, I had not a single issue with this memory. It runs great at stock speeds. It runs even better at overclocked speeds. And it does all this while looking fantastic.

The green and red LED's across the top of the Ballistix Tracer move around seemingly randomly, but it's based off of memory activity for the most part. Sometimes they'll dance rather quickly around and sometimes they change around slowly but they never stay the exact same for long. The high intensity blue LED's that shine down into the pins and memory slots are what really set this kit off. They make all the difference in my opinion. Those are solid at all times by the way. Just gorgeous.

I think the newly freshened Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2-6400 2GB DDR2 memory kit has easily garnered itself an Editors Choice award. We get a lot of hardware here at Virtual-Hideout, and most of it comes in and out of the office, but this memory kit has earned itself a spot in my exclusive list of keepers. You'll be seeing a lot more of memory in future reviews when I have the chance to show it off.

Big thanks go out to Crucial for not only sending this kit in for review, but also for creating the single best memory kit I've ever seen.
