Testing:

Testing the Corsair HX620w was done using the same process I've used for quite some time. Using the Seasonic power angel, I was able to grab the efficiency ratings for this unit while under a 120w load.

Test System:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6400

  • ASUS P5B Deluxe

  • NVIDIA 7800GT OC

  • 2x 80gb WD Hard Drives

  • 2x1GB Supertalent DDR2-6400

  • Sony DVD-RW

As you can see the Corsair HX620w ranks up there with the best of the best as far as efficiency. Not only is it powerful, it'll save you money down the road. It was also extremely quiet during testing.

To test the voltages, both idle and load, I used the ASUS PC Probe II that was included with my P5B Deluxe. To get the load voltages, I loaded up dual prime95 on my Core 2 Duo CPU and let it sit like that for 30mins. Here's the voltages...

As you can see the power supply voltages didn't change at all, but the CPU started absorbing more voltage o_0. Impressive voltages results, but not totally unique to Corsair. There are many quality units out on the market today.

Conclusion:

Hmmm, where to start with this Corsair HX620w Modular power supply. Well good things first; the main unit itself is of high quality textured satin black finish. The internals are extremely well done and, with all I've heard, uses very high quality components. I predict this power supply to last a long time and run very efficient.

Now the not so good; the cables. It's amazing how I've read so many rave reviews of this power supply and can't remember any of them really talk about the cabling. Honestly to me, it's extremely cheap looking, and feeling. It doesn't help the first impression when you have to pull them out of the bag in which they were all bent and crammed in. Add to that the extremely plain look, and stiff feel, along with the skinny and loose connections to the power supplies main body, they just don't feel like they belong on this unit. They feel more like an afterthought, and that's too bad.

Overall the Corsair HX620w is a decent power supply package. You can obtain a quality, and powerful power supply with the addition of modular cables. I would've liked to see just the single 20/24-pin being hard-wired to the unit and have the option of attaching the 8-pin and 4-pin as needed.

I think this Corsair unit, along with the Ultra X-finity cables would make the ultimate power supply. Unfortunately Corsair missed the mark on the cables themselves. They're too stiff, feel too cheap, and just plain connect poorly to the main unit. I'm sure the average consumer might think "wow, modular cables!", but I've got experience with a ton of power supplies, and I get to see the difference between them.

If Corsair would have had a higher quality modular cable system and a red 120mm LED fan on the unit, it would have blown me away. The LED fan is optional of course, but the lackluster modular cables are something that I can not look past in this price range. The cables themselves are the pride and joy of using a modular power supply, how can you look past the cheap feeling cables? I can't.

**EDITORS NOTE**

I've been informed the HX620w is current selling price around $189.99 from newegg, and only $169.99 from ZipZoomFly with free shipping.

Also, Corsair contacted me about this review. Keep your eyes peeled to the forum thread on this product for a discussion with Corsair and some readers on this power supply.
