CoolerMaster Eclipse

Introduction:

We recently had the privilege of checking out CoolerMaster's Mars CPU Cooler which actually stirred up some discussion among friends and other fellow tech heads. Not too often do we get to see something as unique be the cause for questions and comments. When I showed it to a local computer store tech, his reaction was at first to comment, but then the urge to handle and inspect took over. Thought provoking curiosity is the stuff concepts are made of.

This brings us to another reaction brought about another first impression as we take a look at the CoolerMaster Eclipse. While the Mars is a pretty large base performance heat sink, the Eclipse is intended to be the enthusiast's choice of new CPU coolers. While the Mars has the stock and avid users covered, the Eclipse should be able to handle the extreme users.

Terminator! This is a beast of a heat sink with pretty well polished copper heat pipes that resemble claws reaching out from the copper base. It is about 6 inches tall, 4.25 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. There are about 45 solid fins that have a circumference of nearly 12 inches and are about 1 inch deep at the top and almost 3 inches at the bottom. Now, that is some serious thermal dissipating surface area.

The Claws!!!

The copper base isn't completely smooth and ridges can be felt if you slide your finger nail across. Smooth surfaces always transfer heat better than rougher surfaces, but in some rare instances do just fine especially with a good quality thermal paste. A bit more lapping or machining might be in order, especially since the copper pipes are so nicely polished. Anyone could easily pick up some finer grit sand paper and a flat block to add a nice polish.
