External bays

Did I say HUGE yet in this review? Well, here it is again. Even out of the box, the Cosmos 1000 is impressively huge, and I almost don't know where to start. Thank goodness I have somewhat of a system when reviewing enclosures. With my system, I'll start off with the front bezel of the Cosmos 1000. The bezel door is a solid, one-piece design, with a black plastic overlay down the middle and the CoolerMaster logo towards the bottom. The door is held closed with a magnet and gives that reassuring "clunk" when closed. Behind the door is a meshed bezel with five 5.25" external bays; the lower fifth bay is a dual bay with a 3.5" insert. Once nice option is the ability to have the bezel door swing open in either direction by simply swapping the hinge pins and magnets on the door.

Panel release levers

As for the side panels, there's nothing to mention other than "CoolerMaster" is written in small letters on the rear lower corners. The side panels attach to the enclosure differently than most other enclosures on the market. Side panels normally slide back and then pop off. On the Cosmos 1000 a tab on the rear of the enclosure is lifted upwards, which unlocks the side panels from the top. The top of the panel falls away from the enclosure, and then just lifts up and away. On the rear panel you will notice that the PSU is mounted on the bottom. Up towards the top is an opening for an 120mm exhaust fan, and at the top are two smaller openings with rubber grommets for water cooling tubing.

Front I/O

Rear vent fins

Usually just the front, back, and sides are mentioned in enclosure reviews, but on the Cosmos 1000 this is just the tip of the iceberg. The top of the Cosmos 1000 has two large grab handles that span the length of the enclosure on both sides. Obviously, with something this heavy, those handles really come in handy. In between the handles and towards the front of the enclosure is the front panel I/O section. In this area are four USB ports, Audio ports, IEEE port, and eSATA port, along with the Power and Reset buttons and LED's. Moving towards the middle is an area with a rubber mat that will become the new junk tray for some media cards. Now towards the back, which has vent openings and fins that point to the rear of the enclosure. Under this area are two 120mm fans.

Fan Filter

Lastly is the bottom of the Cosmos 1000, which has the same rails as on top, except that here they are used as the feet. At the front and rear on the underside of the enclosure are mesh filters that are removable. A fan in the middle of the enclosure pulls air through a channel and from the front filter. The rear filter is under the power supply, so power supplies that have an 120mm bottom intake fan will get filtered air.
