Introduction:

BFG ES800 Power Supply

Ah the BFG; it's something that has registered on the gamer's radar ever since it's inception back in the sprite filled days of gaming, some time around 1993. Though that weapon has seen many overhauls since; all the way up to being called the "Bio Force Gun 3.14" in the Doom movie; the mental image of the weapon is always the same. It's big, it's bad, and it can do a whole hell of a lot of damage.

It's probably no wonder then that BFG Technology, a United States based purveyor of a growing family of hardware, chose it as their namesake. BFG ended up registering on the collective enthusiast radar in the days of the G80 videocards; though users themselves had been attaching waterblocks to videocards for a number of years, often creating adorable little monstrosities, BFG became one of the first to tie a high end waterblock onto a videocard, offering the users premium overclocking and cooling without the cost of warrantee - considering the investment required for a single card, this didn't seem like such a bad idea.

It probably seems strange, though, that before their release of pre-overclocked and modified cards, BFG had a history spanning all the way back to 2001 - at that time being just another vendor attaching stickers to cards under the Asylum brand, that is - and with nowhere near the amount of recognition they hold today. Yet, no company can ever hope to simply rest on their laurels and become comfortable with the products they offer; no - to succeed a company must diversify. By that, I don't mean pushing more reference products, either. In the case of BFG, this diversification has come through the creation of a few lines of power supplies. While they are surely not the first company to begin selling power supplies under their name (a task usually reserved for memory companies, it would seem), they certainly have a few interesting products available today. On the bench this session is the flagship ES800 - a highly reflective black monster, with a few aesthetic concerns addressed, with it all leading towards a median of performance. Let's see just what we've got.

Features & Specifications:

But before that, it's time for the regularly scheduled delay for the Features, and Specifications of the product!

Features:

Includes four PCI Express® Connectors for Multi Graphics Card Support

Features new 8-Pin PCI Express® Connectors

Quad
12V Rails

Lifetime Warranty*
and 24/7 Tech Support†
___________________________________________

ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91

Supports the latest Intel® and AMD® based platforms requiring 24-Pin motherboard and 4-Pin or 8-Pin 12V connectors. With the 20+4-Pin motherboard connector, it is also backward compatible with previous ATX standards.

Four 12V Rails
By splitting the +12V source into four separate rails, your components are provided the most stable power available while upholding rigorous safety standards.

PCI Express® Ready

The PCI Express® power connectors ensure compatibility with high-end and dual graphics card configurations without having to use unreliable, often performance hindering adapters.

SATA Connectors

Six serial ATA connectors allow you to connect up to six serial ATA devices without needing special adapters.

BFG Thermal Control Technology
During regular operation, the fan slows down to reduce unnecessary noise.

Protection Circuitry
Built-in protection circuitry is able to handle common power irregularities such as over-voltage, overload, and short circuits.

MTBF
A mean time between failure rating of greater than 100,000 hours guarantees a long lasting and reliable source of power.

High Efficiency

While most computer power supplies pinnacle at 80% effciency, the BFG ES Series is typically 80% to 85% effcient, which means more power drawn from the outlet is converted to DC power for your computer than many of the other units on the market.
