A Closer Look:
Now it's time to break down the P5N32-E SLI Plus into sections. I usually like to start off with the CPU Socket, but instead I'm going to start off with the chipset and coolers. Each chipset is cooled by a large copper heatsink, each of which has a single heatpipe moving to a bank of copper fins in the area of the CPU. Under those heatsinks are the nVidia nForce 650i Northbridge and nVidia nForce 570 SLI Southbridge. The socket is LGA775 for Intel Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Duo, and is Quad Core ready. This socket can accept a wide array of Intel LGA775 CPU's. The area around the socket is free of obstructions, and the fins from the heatpipe system shouldn't be an issue with CPU heatsink fans. Moving along in a clockwise manner, the next items in line are the 4 DDR2 DIMM sockets. The sockets are colored blue and white, with the blue being channel A and the white being channel B. The DDR2 bandwidth can reach speeds of up to 12.8GB/s using 800MHz RAM. Next to the RAM slots are the one IDE and one Floppy header, and the motherboard 24pin power header. In this day and age of SATA, don't expect to find two IDE headers on a modern motherboard. Moving on down to the lower right corner, we find the busiest section of the motherboard. First up is the bank of SATA ports, which point at a 90° angle towards the front of the case. Below the bank of SATA ports is the header for the front panel. Moving over to the left is the BIOS chip which contains the Phoenix-Award BIOS. ASUS has provided many options with the BIOS feature on this board. One is the ability to store multiple BIOS settings. For example, one profile could be a setup for gaming and another one strictly for overclocking. The other feature to the ASUS BIOS is the CrashFree BIOS2, which allows you to recover a corrupt BIOS using the provided support CD or update the BIOS using a Flash drive. Lastly, the ASUS MyLogo 3 is the new feature present in the motherboard. This allows you to personalize and add style to your system with customizable and animated boot logos.
