So now with the bottom and middle taken care of, it's time to look at the top. With the motherboard stand-offs in place, it's time to mount the 2 extra legs. Make sure you get the ones with the mounting holes in the side. These are for the bracket for the PCI slots.

I bet you're wondering how to mount the legs. Very simple. Remember the longer screws I mentioned before that are used with the optical drive rails? The screws usually come in a pack of 10, and you only need 4 for the optical drive rails and 2 for this next step.

Mount the motherboard tier with the 2 screws that came with the Tech Station kit and 2 of the longer screws that were purchased. The 2 screws from the kit get driven all the way in through the tier and into the legs. Just make sure it's the screw for the legs opposite from the PCI slots. This leaves us with 2 legs not secured to the top tier.

Now, the take the longer screws and screw them half way in. This should secure the top tier to the lower legs. With about half of the screw still sticking out, take a pair of side cutters or a dremel and cut the heads of the screw off.

When the screw heads are off, grab the extra legs and mount them onto the screws. When mounting the upper legs to the screws its possible that the screws will spin. One way to get most of the screw into the upper legs, is to grab the screw with a pair of side cutters to hold the screw while the upper legs get twisted on.

I went ahead and also cut the excess length off the upper legs to make them line up with the PCI brace. You'll see those pics below.

When all of that is finished, mount the supplied PCI brace and you are DONE. You have just now reversed the layout of the stock large Tech Station. With the motherboard mounted on top, you will not be limited with larger heatsinks, you'll have much easier access to the motherboard, and taking pictures is much easier. If you have any questions, hit me up in the forums or in the IRC chat room.

No restrictions

The reasoning behind the modding of the tech station was to suit my current needs. I wanted a platform to display motherboards when I review them. With the Tech Station the motherboard was mounted on the bottom tier. This caused 2 problems for me one being I could not get a decent picture of a motherboard. The second was the height restrictions if a tall CPU HSF would be used. So I thought about switching the levels and that's what I ended up doing.

Now I have a platform for taking unobstructed pictures and no height limitation on a CPU HSF. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
