Introduction: A lot of us seems to do Plexi Window Mods lately. Having your favorite game logo, or maybe the plain old rectangular shape cut out at the side of your case seems like a good excuse to mod your case! Couple that with a cool blue neon light and you have a glow-in-the-dark PC or simply an excuse not to buy a night light for your room! Heheh! Don't forget that brag-factor when you're at your local LANs! Just cut a Plexi or acrylic sheet and cover up that window and you're on your way to show off the cool hardwares you have in your PC! Cutting the window is one thing, but mounting the Plexi is another. Some modders use a permanent method like rivets, others simply drill some holes and slap the Plexi on with some bolts and nuts. If you like me, you might want to make that window mod looks a little more professional, like having those rubber linings that I used in my Plexi Window and Neon Light Mods recently. The problem is that the linings or moldings only has a single groove design. Meaning you still have to use rivets or bolts/nuts to secure your Plexi to the case. For lazy bastards like me, use double sided tape! Heheh! Hey, it works OK! But recently, the new Case Mods Store, PCMods.Com featured a new product to make the Plexi window installation a little easier. It's almost the same as the rubber moldings that I used, except that it has a 3-groove design. One for securing the case window, one for the Plexi and the other serves as a locking groove. And they were kind enough to provide us with an evaluation set. So here is the kit! ![]() The Molding and Locking Strip from PCMods.Com The moldings came nicely packed in a zip-locked bag, with 9 feet of the molding strip, 9 feet of the locking strip, a small washer (I'll get to that later) and a manual. The manual describes the procedures very well for a newbie on how to go about installing the kit. Kudos to PCMods.Com here! Although I don't really need it! Heheh!
In the picture below, you can clearly see the difference between the moldings that I used and the one sold by PCMods.Com. The smaller groove is meant for the case side and the larger one is for the Plexi. The center groove is for the locking strip.
The image below shows you how I mount my Plexi with my moldings. I just used double sided tapes to mount it on the case side panels! Call me lazy, but I call it improvisation! Yeah, right! Anyway, the next image shows you how to do it correctly with the moldings from PCMods.Com. A lot of difference eh?
On to the hacking then! Of course, you'll need to decide on the shape of the window and then cut it out first. The moldings will work best with rectangular or square shaped windows, with rounded corners. That way, you don't have to cut the moldings everytime you reach a corner and can have a single length for the whole window.
You will notice that to mount the Plexi in this manner, it's size will have to be a little smaller on all sides than the window on the case itself. You might be asking, by how much right? That's where the washer came into play!
