Introduction Hello folks. The other day while I was re-wiring my case fans, as I always do, and It made me think of all the people out there that don't wire up there fans to be neat. I've seen alotta different fans in my time. I learned along time ago that routing the fan wires is one of the biggest improvements you can make to a cases interior. There is nothing worse than seeing a bunch of fans , probably using 3pin-4pin adapters, with their wires looking all spaghetti inside the case. Especially those with windows installed, and cathodes, etc. It's always bugged me to see someone show me their case mod, or I see a case in the CCG with fan wires strung all over the case. It just looks like crap. The same reason rounded cables are made to tidy up your IDE cables, you should put the same kinda consideration into your fan wires and connections.
I know the thought of a fan with "bare wire leads" strikes fear into the hearts of newbies, but the veterans out there would use nothing less. I personally use a baybus, and have for a very long time. I think it's one of the best things you can add to a case. However, baybus = bare wire leads. To use a baybus efficiently, you'll need to extend your fan wires to reach it. This seems to be the part that some people think " oh I can't be bothered with cutting my fan wires, re-soldering new wires to it, etc"......well, you don't have to. In this how-to, I'll show you how you can easily add any amount of wire extension to your fans, and also how to neatly route them thru the case for a non-existant appearance without soldering, or even getting dirty. Things You Need.... First let's start with the things you'll need :
Now that is just one way I did my fans for my Antec 1080AMG. You may be wondering where the speaker wire comes in. Well, it's coming up next. I didn't need "that much" extra wire for the front fans to reach the drive bay and what you see above is mostly me just removing that useless fan alarm and stripping the wires, but it'll give you an idea of what's to come anyway....Now on to the real re-wiring for the rear fans... One of my favorite things about using speaker wire is the fact that it's bundled as a single strand. It has two independent wires inside, both seperated and insulated. Of course, one positive and one negative. All you do is pull apart about an inch or two of the ends where you either strip the connections, or connect them to the fan themselves. Other than that, it's just one strand of wire and much neater in itself. In the case of the speaker wire I use, the positive wire is copper colored and the negative wire is silver colored, so you can't screw it up. Copper to red, Silver to black. Conclusion So there ya have it guys. That's just one of the many ways you can neaten your fan wires. I think it's an important part of a neat case and a neat case will certainly help airflow. Well, that's it, I just wanted to whip this up to draw some attention to routing your fan wires. I've seen an awful lot of nice mods ruined by terrible wire routing, or wires just dangling everywhere (and usually further highlighted by a cathode ...heh) So in closing, CLEAN UP YOUR FAN WIRES$%!@#$!@#
