Introduction:

Ever wonder if you could change that EnergyStar logo when you first start up? Well, lemme show you how you can.

But first, a disclaimer: I (or Virtual Hideout) won't take any responsibility if something happens to your BIOS! This is strictly a "do at your own risk" mod. Modding the BIOS will probably kill any warranty you have on the board.

Now that we have that out of the way, lets continue... My victim : an ABit KT7-RAID board (UL BIOS). Since I don't have a board with an AMI bios handy, this guide is currently only for Award BIOSes.

The Energy Star pic in the BIOS is in a proprietary format (.EPA). We'll create a regular BMP file, and convert it to EPA format. These are the tools you'll need:

- CBROM 2.0 or higher (older versions have probs with newer BIOSes)
- BMPtoEPA
- A fresh copy of your BIOS
- Compatible version of AWDFLASH for your board (Probably on the motherboard CD)

Note about BMPtoEPA: There are 2 versions around, one is made by Award (DOS-based) and another is made for Windows by Michael Rosenbaum. I'll show you how to use both versions.

Creating the image

We're looking to create a 1-bit (black and white) image that's 136x84 pixels. Don't worry, we'll add color later. Use whatever paint prog you have at hand.

Go with a black background

Let's add some stuff. I'm going To pimp VH and HardOCP for our purposes :)

Half Done

Remember, just use white on black for the time being. If your paint prog uses anti-aliasing, make sure it's turned off. You don't have to worry about that with MSPaint :)

Here we go
