Part 1: Parts & Planning:

Say one day you’re looking around your cramped house, and you realize that your last computer upgrade has left you with an excess of spare parts lying around. Motherboard and CPU, maybe an old 20gb hard drive, a few sticks of ram, a power supply and maybe a CD Drive. What’s a guy to do?

Well if you are like me, you look for some poor sole to pawn this obsolete junk off of! Ok just kidding, but if you’ve already tried that to no avail, how about making something to take to a LAN party to show off? A nice dedicated server for running Total Annihilation ;)

But of course we can’t just toss the parts into a standard case, where’s the fun in that?

Well lets get right to it. Here is the list of parts I found I had lying around.

Internal bits:

  • Motherboard:  GA-7N400 pro2, will need to be sent back for warrantee work, but still works.

  • CPU: AMD 2500 Barton, a great overclocker

  • Ram: 2X512gb of 3200 generic ram

  • Hard drive: 25gb IBM

  • Video Card: Geforce 4 4600ti (I preordered this card back in the day, and only just replaced it with a new 6800GT)

  • Sony PSone monitor (using M Pro’s tutorial for use with a PC )

A while back I intended to modify my Aopen HX08 so I bought some water-cooling supplies but replaced the case and basically forgot about the parts. No sense in letting them go to waste now!

Water cooling supplies:

  • CPU Block: Cyclone EvolutionS V2.0  (purchased in October 2003 from www.criticool.com)

  • Water pump: ViaAqua VA-305 (1200 L/h)

  • Radiator: Heater Core from a junk yard ($15)

  • Tubing: ½” copper pipe

The Case itself:

The case will be made out of 0.08”X2’X2’ sheets of aluminum, I bought 3 of them for $70 Canadian, which should be 1 more than I actually need.

Tools:

To cut the aluminum, I will be using everything from a table saw with a carbide blade, to a pair of tin-snips. A dremel might be handy as well, so I might grab one of those up if the time comes that I need it. Other tools include

  • BernzOmatic welding kit:

  • Copper Pipe Cutter

  • JB Weld

For attaching the aluminum, I will be using the BenzOmatic gas welding/brazing kit as well as judicious amounts of JB Weld, there is no end to usefulness of JB Weld!  I will also need to pick up a drill and taping kit as well to make the mounts for the motherboard and other parts.
