Day 0: Just getting in... So it’s my second trip to Quakecon, down in Dallas, Texas, where the temperature is 40C. 3000 people are bringing their own computers, another 3000 are just here to see the sites, visit with friends, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. It’s a full on production, dealing with this many people, but this is the 13th time for Quakecon, hopefully it’s their lucky number. Even with the regular staff, there is no way they could run the show without the public who volunteer for everything from security to “Crimp Nation”. Think of the thousands of network cables they are already slaving away building. This year the Hilton Anatole is the host, with about 26 different venders and sponsors trying to get all our attention. Not many better spots to get access to their best customers as well as the people who start word of mouth buzz. I don’t know what to expect this year for announcements, the sponsors list wasn’t completed until a few days before Quakecon. In 2005, we had Quake 4’s first showing and the 7800 series of video cards making an impression. For more info, check out the Quakecon page, look at the gallery of previous years, and if you are close enough, head out to Dallas and join in. If you can’t, I’ll have more coverage here on VH as often as I can drag myself away from everything.
