My Belated Date with a Celeron 300A!

The Father of OC Chips! Or Grandfather!
Most experienced overclocker would tell you that the Intel Celeron 300A is probably the chip that brought overclocking to the mainstream. You've also seen like a ka-zillion times how overclockable (huh?) these CPUs were, and the specifications of it, so let me just cut to the chase!

I recently got my hands on these legendary CPUs when a friend of mine decided to do a major system upgrade. He was running a 300A@375MHz, via an 83FSB. This is mainly due to the limitations of his mobo. He was about to sell off the CPU to his uncle when I somehow managed to persuade him to exchange that chip with my 333A! (Don't laugh!) He agreed to it, so I had another new toy, at least it was new to me, to play with!

I had assembled systems with 300A's for clients before, but never attempted to overclock the chip. So, this is my belated date with this piece of gem! His CPU was a Slot 1 version, with a Stepping ID 0, which means that the CPU that I got was from the very first revision. Cool! More details in the picture below.

I didn't have much spare hardwares to play around with, all I got was a Gigabyte BX-2000+ Slot 1 mobo and some old stuff. The mobo wasn't really OC stuff, but it's worth a try anyway! Also a stick of PC100 NCP 128MB CL2 SDRAM and my trusty G400 OEM 32MB.

I also got a spare Alpha P3125 and P125 HSFs from my previous system setups, so I decided to use them too. I decided to use the P3125 heatsink due to the copper plate embedded in it and attached the CPU to it with the P125 retaining clip and screws. That's because the P3125 clip was more suited for a Slot 1 Pentium !!!.

Rub on some Alpha Silicon-based thermal goop and the 300A is good to go! Next up is slapping it onto the mobo and into the case!
